Magical Sense
by Malcolm de Chazal (translated by Jean Bonnin)
Magical Sense is
the mystical reinterpretation of the world in the form of
poetry and aphorism. Malcolm de Chazal was an artist and writer who was on the peripheries of the surrealist movement which
included Salvador Dali, Man Ray and André Breton.
Magical Sense, which could also be translated as Magical
Wisdom, consists of seven hundred and fifty-five Pensées or
Aphorisms. These are insights, perceptions and often very humorous
visions, which provide us with a gateway into a world where the inanimate and
the sentient seamlessly and indistinguishably flow one into the other... This tapping into the
actual life beyond the surface of all things was arrived at not by rational means but by de Chazal allowing himself to be absorbed by the world of the subconscious by depriving his body and isolating his mind and spirit, until he
perfected what he regarded as being a completely new method of writing.
To read Magical
Sense is to enter into a mystical and magical world where the
appreciation of nature, the universe and the subconscious mind meld to create a
startlingly original way in which to appreciate the
beauty that surrounds us.
